Kincaid’s Country Inn Supper Club is one of the classic restaurants in Wisconsin, and one of the best loved places to eat in Rice Lake WI. We’re located in the northwestern edge of the Badger State, in a classic location that’s been serving Barron County for generations.
History of the Country Inn

“The Country Inn” started out as Snobl’s Tavern. It was built by Frank Snobl who farmed the 80 acres south of the tavern. Frank and his wife, Anna, lived on the farm with their two sons, Leonard (Lennie) and Laddie. Frank was also an excellent carpenter who built his own home (now owned by Donn (Hokey) and Carolyn West.
Frank and Anna ran the Snobl Tavern which had beer, wine, liquor, food, adn dances with live bands. It was a very popular “gathering place” for noon lunches and especially for night-time dancing. After Frank Snobl was killed by a team of run-away horses, Anna Snobl and her son, Lennie manages the business until it was deeded over to her son, Laddie and his first wife, Valoras in 1948. They called it “Snobl’s Nite Club.”
Snobl’s Nite Club was sold to the Amundsons in 1951. It was then called “Amundsons.” Information on them is lax except that they had a beautiful daughter who dated Lennie Snobl.

A Northwestern Wisconsin Landmark
This large totem-pole was a “land mark” for the Country Inn. It was established by Laddie Snobl and remained standing until the 1990’s, when the wood could no longer be repaired (then it was taken down).
In 1953, John and Emma Lakotas from Minneapolis, purchased “Amundson’s”. They decided to leave the “big city” and move with their two grade-school children to rural Rice Lake. John and his partner, Gordon Peterson, owned a pig farm in St. Anthony Township (near Minneapolis) where they fed 300 Hampshire pigs. They would go to the downtown large restaurants and collect their garbage to feed the pigs. This was a lucrative business at the time and they used this money to purchase “Amundson’s”.
John was also a champion amateur golfer (Minnesota State Champion twice). They named their night club “Lakotas” and had a golfer depicted on the front cover of their menu.

Kincaid's Country Inn: A Long-Time Staple In Rice Lake
The Lakotas family sold the business and moved back to Minneapolis in 1957, where John owned a “workingman’s” bar.

Snobl's to Amundson to Lakotas, Don Dodge, U-R Club, to Country Inn
Don Dodge sold to Art Ulenkott and Dan Rowe from Bloomer in 1961. They called the business “The U-R Club”.
Later in 1962, Ray and Lois Peterson from St. Cloud, MN bought the night club and ran it as “Lois and Ray’s U-R Supper Club.” They and their three children lived in the new, large home they built east of the nightclub. They quickly found they needed more space in the club so they built an open porch on the east side of the building.
They renamed the business “Country Inn. A few years later, the “seasonal porch” was enclosed to make it a year-round room.
